The festival of Makar Sankranti is celebrated with great pomp and show amongst Hindu communities. It is celebrated in different names and customs across the country especially in India and Nepal. This is the day when the Sun changes its direction which has a religious as well as geographical significance. It also transits from Sagittarius and enters Capricorn.
In Hindu Mythology, Makar means Capricorn and Sankranti means transit of the sun, hence the name Makar Sankranti.
In Vedic Astrology, Sun is considered as the factor of soul, energy, father, leader, honor, king, high position, government job, etc. Its lord is Leo. In Libra, it is in a lower position while in Aries it is at a higher position. Its friendly planets are Moon, Jupiter, and Mars while Saturn and Venus are its enemy planets. If we compare the relationship between Sun and Capricorn, Capricorn is associated with Saturn which makes it an enemy of the Sun.
On this day, Lord Vishnu killed the demons on the earth and cut off their heads, and threw them on the Mandora mountain. This victory is celebrated in the form of Makar Sankranti. One can also see the change in the monsoon where autumn begins to subside and marks the onset of spring. As a result, the day becomes longer, the night becomes shorter. According to religious beliefs, on this day, Lord Surya goes to meet his son Shani Dev which amplifies the love between father and son increases. It makes worshiping Lord Sun and Saturn is auspicious.
Makar Sankranti will be celebrated on Shukla Paksha of Maagh (January) month of 14th 2021 this year. The auspicious time of bathing and donating starts from 8:30 am to 4:46 pm. Auspicious work also starts from this day itself. According to the ancient scriptures, the period of Uttarayan is considered as the day of the gods and Dakshinayan as the night of the gods. Donating sesame seeds is extremely important on this day. The Uttarayan of the Sun increases the efficiency of humans.
According to the belief, on this day Goddess Ganga descended on earth and followed King Bhagirath and went to Gangasagar via Kapil Muni’s ashram. For the first time, King Bhagirath surrendered his ancestors in the holy waters of the Ganges. For this reason, it became a custom to bathe in the holy Ganges on this day. Whosoever prays in the Ganges gets relief from all its sorrows. Life brings prosperity and happiness.
Donating rice, wheat, sweets on this day brings prosperity to a person and to overcome his obstacles. It is also believed that a person who sacrifices his body on this day gets salvation and is freed from the cycle of life and death.

The lord of Capricorn is Shani Dev. Despite being a son of the Sun, he has a hostile relationship with it. So, to prevent from suffering from the presence of the Sun in the house of Saturn one should donate sesame seeds.
